CRITICAL EDITIONS, TRANSLATIONS AND COMMENTS

15-56 13
Abstract

This publication presents a new, more complete critical edition of the text of the work of the Ethiopian monk Bahrey, which he called «The History of the Galla» (Zena-hu lä-galla). This is the oldest of the works that make up the body of literature dedicated to the Oromo people. This essay in the Geez language is a unique source on the history, ethnography and geography of the settlement of the Cushitic-speaking Oromo people (Galla — in the Ethiopian Christian tradition), who have been living in the vast territories of the Horn of Africa for more than four centuries. Unlike previous editions, we used the previously unknown fourth list of this work.

Abstract

This publication is the first translation from German of the afterword to D. Bonhoeffer’s book «Nachfolge» (Discipleship), written by Martin Kuske and Ilse Tödt, publishers of the fourth volume of «Dietrich Bonhöffer Werke» (the second collected works of D. Bonhoeffer). This publication presents the first two parts of the four that make up the afterword. They address the following issues: the early ethical views of D. Bonhoeffer (1926–1929); his turn to pacifism and then to Scripture (1930–1932); the historical and political context of the work on the drafts of the Nachfolge (1933–1937). A brief review of the author’s literary interlocutors is given. The translation is supplemented by our comments, which are presented by the second level of footnotes.

RESEARCHES. Patrology

Abstract

The article considers the controversy over the famous argument of Severus of Antioch, compliant to the general formula of which the confession of two natures in Christ taken as common natures of deity and humanity necessarily entails agreeing with that the incarnation of Christ signifies the incarnation of the whole Trinity in the whole humankind, namely, the incarnation of each of the hypostases of the Trinity in each human being. This argument was responded by Johannes of Caesarea in his «Apology for the Counsil of Chalcedon». The focus of the article is a detailed analysis of the given argument, the reciprocal argumentation of Johannes of Caesarea and Severus’ reply to his objections in chapters 17–19 of the book II of the treatise «Against impious Grammaticus». Besides, the topical area of the research includes studying the issue of conceptual frames of Monophysite and Chalcedonite theology wherein this Severus’ argument receives its theological and polemical significance, discussion over the historical context of its appearance and the reaction on it in the Chalcedonite camp, as well as some issues of its reception in the consequent tradition of Monophysite disputations.

RESEARCHES. Exegesis in history

147-169 86
Abstract

The article focuses on the image of the ship in the works of West European theologians in the early Middle Ages, being one of the key images of medieval theology and Christian culture. A brief overview of foreign and domestic research deals with the publications, devoted to the importance of the ship in medieval culture. The following issues are touched upon: the source of ship’s symbolic meanings; ship as a symbol of a religious community, an image of the Holy Cross, of world and man, of the stages of a person’s spiritual growth; symbolic meanings of parts of the ship and ship’s inventory. The study showed that ship denoted the Church of Christ and the Synagogue; it could symbolize the Holy Cross, prayer, alms, hope, both a person in general and Virgin Mary, as well as Christian virtues and the stages of a Christian’s spiritual growth.

Abstract

The review presents the issues of the annual «Apocrypha» for 1992 and 1993. Articles in the journal were published in French (most of them), German and English; the attention of researchers was mainly devoted to the apocrypha of Christian origin. Two publications have a theore ti cal significance — an article by Éric Junod on the concept of «Apocrypha of the New Testament» (in the third issue) and an article by Pierluigi Piovanelli on the process of the composition of the Ethiopian biblical canon (in the fourth issue). In addition, No. 3 highlights the problems associated with such early Christian monuments as the «Acts of the Apostle John», the «Sufferings of John», the «Virtues of John», the «Acts of the Apostle Peter», the «Pseudo-Clementines», the latin lists of the apostles. No. 4 deals mainly with apocalyptic literature. There are studies of 4 Ezra, the «Apocalypse of Paul», the «Apocalypse of Shenute», the «Apocalypse of the Virgin», the «Apocalypse of Thomas», the «Apocalypse of the seven heavens», «Kerygma Petri», «The Acts of the Apostle Paul», and another work on «Pseudo-Clementines».
