The Call of the Prophet Elisha: An Exegetical Analysis of 1 Kgs. 19, 19–21

Abstract
The callings of the prophets of the Lord to the ministry occupy an important place in the books of the Old Testament. Of the many prophetic vocations described in the pages of the Old Testament, the least noticeable and least known to a wide range of readers is the vocation of the prophet Elisha. This very brief story is told in 1 Kgs. 19, 19–21. This article is devoted to the analysis of this fragment. It is important that in Russian Biblical studies there is not (at least, we do not know) a single detailed commentary on this significant biblical passage. Special attention will be paid to the following issues: how Elijah recognized Elisha, why Elijah throws his mantle on Elisha’s shoulders, the relation of Elisha’s request to kiss his parents to Lk. 9, 61–62, the meaning of Elijah’s words, the use of the verb חַבָז / zābaḥ in 1 Kgs. 19, 21, why Elisha burns the equipment of his oxen, what is the meaning of Elisha’s feast, the meaning of the verb «to serve» (תֵרֵשׁ / šērēṯ) in relation to Elisha.
